Smart surface is an experimental research to create a functional landscape surface for runoff solution, modular system, and perception of private and open space. By use materials with different permeability and texture, the proposal used script as a tool to explore the definition of the open and private outdoor spaces in Xintaidi Shanghai, and created a perceivable natural looking paving effect with smart modular paving prototypes.
